A New Hamburg-based cheesemaker, Mountainoak Cheese, is celebrating after their products won five awards at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
Adam and Hannie van Bergeijk, who own Mountainoak Cheese, were thrilled to find out they had won once again in mid-November.
"It was really nice to win a couple of first-places," said Adam. "Last year, we were the grand champions."
Their two-year-old gouda won first place in its category (Firm and Hard - Interior Ripened), and the Wild Nettle product also won first place (Flavoured Cheese - Except Smoked).
Their cumin aged won second place (Flavoured Cheese - Except Smoked), as did their smoked gouda (Flavoured Cheese - Naturally Smoked). Their chill pepper gouda placed third also placed third (Flavoured Cheese - Naturally Smoked).
This marked the 99th year for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, the world's largest indoor agricultural and equestrian event, before going online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It attracts competitors from around the world.
Mountainoak Cheese is also offering holiday gift baskets, which make a perfect gift for your family, or your valued customers and hard-working team.
The pre-made baskets can be purchased as-is, customized to suit your needs, and wedges can be added to your own baskets. All wedges are 225 grams each.
"It's a great value - your money will be well-spent," said Adam, on the holiday baskets.
The small ($35) offers three varieties of gouda - farmstead aged, wild nettle and chilli pepper, as well as the moss berry farm jam.
Medium baskets ($58) come with five varieties of gouda - the same options as small, plus cumin mild and black pepper. It also includes provisions charcuterie jelly and a Mountainoak market tote.
The large baskets ($70) offer six varieties of gouda - farmstead smoked, chili pepper, black truffle, farmstead gold, wild nettle, and black pepper. It will also include provisions charcuterie jelly, a Mountainoak market tote, plus locally made crackers.
Adam encouraged the community to support local. "If you support your own local economy, it's going to be good for yourself as well."
