This past week on Tuesday, June 27, saw the first traditional graduation ceremony take place since 2019. The graduating class gathered at the Tavistock Memorial Hall for the event.
Principal Nicola Bankes led the evening's events with some parting words as she announced her retirement.
"Graduation is one of those important life events that need to be recognized as it marks the transition from elementary to high school. It recognizes the closing of one door and the opening of another."
Mrs. Bankes added how fortunate they felt to be able to celebrate the graduates in person. "It was a wonderful event! The graduates all looked amazing and were happy and excited to be celebrating with their friends and family members."
Following the formal awards, graduates celebrated with cake and punch and a dance supervised by staff and parents.
Due to COVID protocols, the school was unable to have a graduation celebration at the hall for the last two years. The 2021 celebrations will be remembered by many as it was an outside event held in a torrential downpour. "Umbrellas were the coveted accessory of the day last year!"
Mrs. Bankes states that 2020 graduates had their diplomas delivered by volunteer fire fighters who drove around town in a Fire Truck.
"We are very proud of our graduates! This group of students has not had an easy route to graduation," she says. "They made it through multiple shifts between in-person and remote learning, physical distancing, and a great deal of hand sanitizer. On Monday night, they demonstrated their resilience and adaptability and celebrated in style. We wish them well as they move on to high dchool and all the best for the future!"
